Hp laptop brightness control

The screens are so dim it's hard to see the content on them. Windows Operating System: Windows 7 Enterprise, 64-bit

I have searched many forums and I cannot find a fix. The function keys F8 and F9, which are labeled to control screen brightness, are not working. I recently received a new laptop at work (a few of us have) and we are all having the same issue with this laptop.
